My approach to therapy is a blend of processing the past, relaxing into the present, and preparing for the future by learning how to skillfully navigate difficult moods and thoughts.

  • I don’t see most of the patterns that lead to mental health challenges as pathologies. They are usually old patterns were learned in response to past experiences, which may have once been useful, but no longer work now that circumstances have changed. We can recognize and change patterns that are no longer helpful without pathologizing them or judging oneself for picking them up in the first place.

I work with a wide variety of issues, but specialize most in treating anxiety and depression. Chronically high stress or low mood is often the result of mental patterns that create feedback loops of suffering. We can recognize them and learn how to avoid spiraling into worsening anxiety or getting sucked in by rumination, finding mental space and settling into our experience.

  • My training as a mental health counselor included a concentration in contemplative psychotherapy, an orientation which integrates Western psychological theory and modern, evidence-based therapeutic techniques with mindfulness and other Eastern approaches to cultivating mental peace. My teachers on understanding and working with the mind have ranged from PhD holding scientists to Buddhist monks, and even included a few who were both.
